Onions May Not Always Be Nature's Tear-Jerkers. New York Times - An onion is nature's idea of a tear-gas grenade. Left intact, it's a harmless thing. But once it is sliced and diced, cell walls are broken, and chemicals mix to form a real tear-jerker of a compound, thiopropanal-S-oxide.
