John, per our conversation this afternoon, this dialog that just popped up gave me an idea about the relationship between instant messaging and Radio.

Interesting development. The Zaphod mail list just went closed. Hah. Wonder why. Look at the cowards scurrying for cover. There was some data in that list, real names of real people, saying and doing things they probably don't want anyone to know about. Isn't it funny how when their privacy and livelihoods are at stake they don't hesitate to protect it. Cowards.

First thanks for all the emails of support re the Winerlog thing.

I just read most of the posts on their mail list.

I saw my personal phone number published. This certainly is way over the line of criticizing or lampooning a public figure.

I saw one of our Radio 8 beta testers there -- that's the highest form of trust we can show of someone, and it really hurts to see that trust betrayed. (I sent private email to the person involved.)

I saw the webmaster of Heroes & Villains, our most expensive-to-host free site, take cheap shots at my integrity and the professionalism of my company; as we have been working with him privately to transition his site off our servers.

The things people say and do there hurt me personally and my company, and also our users and developers who are trying to build businesses around our software.

We're serious about protecting our business and privacy. If you're participating in this, understand that there are serious consequences in interfering with our business and we won't stand by and do nothing.

Let's take the discussion off our websites, and move it where it belongs, on the list that was established to discuss the site in question. I've signed up, pending approval by the listmaster. As soon as I get approval I will post a pointer to this page there.

Instead of distracting our community with what has been, up till now, merely an annoyance, let's go there, and ask them if they really want to support what whatever it is that the coward behind Winerlog is doing.

First I've fixed a major problem in file.synchTableWithFolder, won't release it until tomorrow. Earlier versions didn't work well with scalars because timeModified verb doesn't work with scalars. T

he problem was the type "code" is a scalar, and that's what we were working with. So the contents of the Macros folder was loaded every ten seconds whether or not there were any changes. We now keep a cache at system.temp.fileSynchCache, with an entry for each scalar we're managing, indexed by its file path, with a value of the last time it was loaded.

This way if the file changes, we reload it, but otherwise we have a reliable mod date for the scalar.

To prove that the new code works, here's a pic of Ru Paul's mouth, as viewed through the frameIt macro.

<%frameit ("", bgcolor:pink)%>

As the Enterprise heads to rendezvous with that vessel, the Pagh, Worf discusses Klingon policy with Riker, particularly the idea that the first officer's duty is to assassinate the captain should he become weak.

Maybe it'll lighten your day and make you laugh. I think they're pretty funny. I've uploaded the script to my scratchpad, so you can do it yourself.
Update: I decided I can't stand to wait, I don't know when to stop waiting. So-- I programmed it this way. When the thread copies files, it makes a note of that. The next time around, if it copies more files, it pushes the image HTML on the accumulated text. It keeps doing this as long as it had work to do. The first time it does no uploading, and there is accumulated text, it opens the home page for you, with the images there.

Now you can post to categories without posting to the home page. If you have categories enabled, there's a new checkbox, the first one, called Home Page (it effectively becomes a category).
Good morning and welcome to my life as a programmer. First thing this morning I'm going to investigate a problem some people have reported -- when they update their name or email address, it doesn't seem to percolate up to the community server. To test this I will change my name temporarily to Uncle Gravy, which is something people used to call me many years ago. Don't ask why and don't be confused, my name is still Dave Winer, although the cloud might not think so! Back in a bit with a report..

1. Update #1. I think I have a clue why the name doesn't make it up to the cloud. Radio doesn't send it! Oy yoy yoy. (Easy to fix.)

2. Update #2. As predicted the fix was simple. Issue closed. On to the next one.

Yesterday my computer became so slow as to be virtually unusable. I got a lot of work done anyway, but sometimes I'd just stare at the thing and wait for it to echo a key I typed 15 seconds earlier. This morning I cured the problem. My C drive was full. I got the news from my emailer -- "I have so little room I can't even save an email message," it said to me. Ahhh. So I deleted a huge number of automatic backups of huge databases, and now have several gigabytes free on my C drive. Everything is fast again. Fast is good.

Boy it's a hot summer this year, what do you think? Yeah, I know. I'm from New York. That's pretty far from Australia. OK so let's see if it works. It did.
I've got the user interface coded and tested. Now I want to see if the notification gets through to Weblogs.Com for both Have's Handsome Radio Blob, and the Michegas category. Back in a minute. Not sure if it worked. Trying again. My Events page says the notification was sent, but Weblogs.Com may think my site is a ping-spammer. I'll wait a few minutes and try updating again. OK, it's been about 45 minutes (two phone conversations) so now I'll try updating and see if both the home page and the category page show up on Weblogs.Com. Now I think I have the glitches worked out. You should see both Michegas and DHRB on Weblogs.Com. Wish me luck.

Just for fun, I'm now rendering my Michegas category in HTML as well as XML. It turned out to be as much fun as I hoped it would. I added code that notifies Weblogs.Com when a category home page is updated, and I made the code better, more loosely coupled. Should make upstreaming perform just a little better. Every bit counts. ";->"

I have to put a user interface on it, and do some testing and then I should be ready to release the parts. ETA -- about an hour.

This morning I'm working on the Manila-Blogger Bridge Tool, making it work for non-news-item-oriented Manila sites. My test site is my test site from 1999, when we were bringing Manila online. It's not a news-item-oriented site. But first I'm testing with the original test site, to make sure I haven't broken that connection. One more test. This post should go to my Blogger test site, dave.blogspot.com. Postscript: Everything still works. Whew.

My last name was given to my grandfather by a random person at Ellis Island. It's also my mother's last name, and many of the people in my family that I care for.

That one would mis-spell it doesn't say anything about me or members of my family, other than I have a last name that can be mis-spelled in an insulting way. (It can also be mis-spelled in a nice way, but people who want to make positive statements, generally don't do it by mis-spelling things.)

It does however make a statement about the person who mis-spelled it.

1. You don't believe your argument merits serious consideration by intelligent people.

2. You don't have respect for me.

I'm doing the final checkout of the Manila-Blogger Bridge tool for Radio 8 before releasing it as a beta. If this works, the data should get initialized but nothing should mirror because the Tool is not enabled. (Good thing I checked that, the post did show up on the test Manila site, because the callback code was not respecting the enabled boolean. It does now. So you should see this on DHRB and not on the Manila site. Testing.) Good that worked now. Next step, enable the mirroring. So now you should see this on both the Manila site and the Radio blog. Testing. 1. 2. 3.

This post contains a macro. Hopefully you won't see it on the Manila site. The macro comes here: <%random (1, infinity)%>. You should see a reasonably large random number there. Let's see if it works.

OK, it worked. It's a little tricky to process macros on the way out, but I've got it working. Jake and/or Brent will have to review this to make sure the rendering environment is equivalent to the environment used in upstreaming. I'm going to move on to doing the Web page that configures the feature.

From now until I turn it off all my posts will be mirrored on the Manila site. This is a big feature request. How will I get Radio 8 to work with Manila. And as an extra bonus it should work with services that support the Blogger API, which includes, of course, Manila and Blogger.

Let's see if it gets there. Then the next step will be to get changes to percolate to the emulation site.

She thinks this is just like when AOL opened Usenet to all their users. "HI WHAT IS THIS" they typed not knowing there were a lot of mealy mouthed Unix freaks who never bathe watching them take over their Internt. Shelley doesn't know these people. They're geeks. Maybe some of them don't have that much to say. I don't care. But they write code. My COO is going to get the suits to use this stuff. Some of the people who are trying it out tonight are going to write new distributed apps, as in apps that aren't so centralized. The blogging stuff is like MacWrite and MacPaint. If you want developers you gotta have users. Oh that's right I forgot the the old Unix crowd doesn't like users. OK. I do.

Microsoft promises the vision we outlined in the Apple piece. To form an opinion on this you'd have to have an application in mind and then do some performance comparisons under realistic loads. My intuition says it doesn't matter much how fat XML is for protocols -- the Internet and LANs have scaled to push around lots of images and MP3s, which are huge compared to a SOAP or XML-RPC message.

"Scripting News" is full today, what with the awards and other stuff, so I thought I'd ask this question over here. What's up with MIME-RPC that it has to be so condescending to XML-RPC to make his idea fly? Hmmmm. Here's the deal. MIME-RPC goes over transports other than HTTP. That in itself is a good thing. I suppose there are some other advantages, but they're hidden amid the bluster and hype.
