Dan Bricklin: Impressions after riding a Segway HT: Part 1. In Part 2, he points to An exclusive look at the engineering behind the Segway HT, with some never-before-published technical details.

Test of the Google box.

(From Google email) "You must include this license key with every call you make to the Google Web APIs service. This license key entitles you to 1000 queries per day".

License Key Generated "Your license key provides you access to the Google Web APIs service and entitles you to 100 queries per day." Eh Googlers, is it 100 or 1000?!

Rael, Dave, it's not a 100 queries per day limit, but a 1000 queries per day limit.

Google Web APIs FAQ: Does Google have any plans to sell Google Web APIs as a service? "Not at this time." Looks like if you go see them and give them money they would turn it back!

Of course it looks more interesting out there!

Tim O'Reilly: Inventing the Future "As a result, I believe strongly that Web services APIs need to have, at minimum, a low-volume option that remains free of charge. It could be done in the same way that a company like Amazon now builds its affiliates network. A developer signs up online using a self-service Web interface for a unique ID that it must present for XML-based data access. At low volumes (say 1,000 requests a day), the service is free. This promotes experimentation and innovation. But at higher volumes, which would suggest a service with commercial possibility, pricing needs to be negotiated." this is what Google is doing (at least for now in the beta stage)

And finaly! Google is just the juice Google gives developers a new API to play with.

He continues: "Placeholder for something that's very important, fun and wonderful. Coming soooon." Grrrr ;-)

Dave: "Come back here in a few minutes for some really big news." eh eh. He knows how to keep his audience focused and on the alert

Daylight savings time

  • Dave says :
    • I was just getting ready to report a very disturbing bug in Radio's upstreaming code. I went to my Events page to look for something, and saw that last night my system had upstreamed the full contents of my www folder. "This is not good," I said to myself, imagining what would happen to the server if everyone's Radio were doing this. Then it hit me. Last night was the switch to Daylight Savings Time. The clocks moved forward by one hour. Now I have to figure out why the upstreaming code interpreted this change as a signal to upstream everything.
  • My bet:
    • I had a similar problem at work last week with CVS, more exactly WinCVS
    • All the files of the project were marked as "localy modified" by WinCVS (files icons turn red)
    • Obviously nobody had modified their local checkout during the week-end :-)
    • I found this message explaining it was caused by the strange way Windows deals with "last modified" dates.
