kuro5hin.org || The future of blog: The scaling barrier
Blogs have a scaling problem. Kinda like clubs. The good crowd moves in and they become these perfect little places for some time. And then too many people start coming in, and the magic disappears. Teenagers take over and after a couple of years place is converted into a bad fast food restaurant. #

Great Freeware
Welcome to this limited collection of the very best freeware utils in the known universe. This isn't a comprehensive listing of every freeware item ever made, just the ones I think are worth downloading and using. If it ain't great, it ain't here. The hard work, generosity, imagination and creativity of the authors of the programs posted here are an infinite source of admiration and respect, so it seems only right to share these utilities with all of you.

Identity Management: Applications
It seems everyone in the do-it-yourself identity space plans to offer similar services: contact management, calendar, e-mail, Web-hosting, perhaps vanity e-mail addresses or domain names. But these are rapidly becoming commodities. Most of these basic services will be loss leaders, designed to catch an early audience ... #

rdesktop: A Remote Desktop Protocol client
rdesktop is an open source client for Windows NT Terminal Server and Windows 2000 Terminal Services, capable of natively speaking Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) in order to present the user's NT desktop. Unlike Citrix ICA, no server extensions are required. Utile! #

Book Review: Strategies for Web Hosting and Managed Services by Doug Kaye
I've just finished going through Doug Kaye's book on web hosting. Doug describes the web hosting options available and describes strategies for outsourcing, risk management, modeling traffic, and other issues. This is the most complete collection of information about hosting I've ever seen (...) this book serves a real need and I'm sure there's plenty of people out there wishing they knew what's in this book.

You would think that web server log analysis should be a solved problem by now. The market for good, useful tools is huge and the problem is old. In the past I used log analysis software and I wasn't impressed. Two leading free tools (Analog and Webalizer) are doing industrial-strength but very uninspired job. They are old and busted. They are Ford Ts. I felt that it could be done better, that we need a Ferrari of log analysis tools, a new hotness. Unfortunately I didn't know how to build this new hotness but when I saw it I knew this is it. I'm not going to bore you with the details, just see their 60 seconds demo. I was blown away by simplicity and usefulness. It really takes analyzing logs to the next level [via Krzysztof Kowalczyk's Weblog] #

New Architect: Design Patterns for Web Programming
All the same, MVC hasn't yet been widely adopted in Web development. MVC tools for the Web exist; a few frameworks are available, including Maverick (mav.sourceforge.net) and Struts (jakarta.apache.org/struts). But like most design patterns, you don't really need a special tool to use MVC (although, a pre-built tool would probably be easier to use than rolling your own solution). So why hasn't MVC overtaken the Internet the way it has classical application development? #

The Approaching Age of Virtual Nations
Virtual nations (v-nations) are online masses of individuals, unified by a common cause or ideology, that mirror real nations in the inclusion of and progression toward leadership, laws, power, security, monetary systems, and other elements. They will act as both a threat to and a hope for global resource allocation, cooperation, and security. Microsoft Announces Web Services Development Kit Technology Preview
Microsoft has announced a technical preview for the Microsoft Web Services Development Kit (WSDK). The WSDK is a .NET class library for building Web services using the latest Web services protocols, including WS-Security, WS-Routing, DIME, and WS-Attachments. It provides a low-level API that allows developers to apply these protocols directly to individual SOAP messages being sent using HTTP.

Is Red Hat the Microsoft of Linux? I'd recommend Bugzilla. My experience in this area is that you want a very good bug tracking system that will scale well. What this means in plain English is that, when you go to manually subscribe to a site, you can type just its URL, or even just a domain like www.someblog.com, and NetNewsWire will without fuss go ahead and find the RSS feed for you.

Jake's Radio 'Blog: Puzzled over Flash Text Editor
Here is an attempt to summarize (and help solve) this dilemna...
After some educational poking (nice code!) and considering that other demos on the sites have source code available, the best solution might be to simply ask the author for the source file (.fla) or ask for modification. Flash can do http post since version 4 with the getURL and XML.send (this might be of interest). Adding a simple button on this interface to do a http post a radiotype url (127.0.0.1:5335/whatever) is trivial.
Sending a non Flash version to a page can be done with some javascript coding or inserting code for the non aware browser in the noembed tag.
I am not a Flash developer but I am evaluating some similar tools for an application we are developing. Alternatives rich text input methods tat we are considering developer worthy includes products from Ektron (activex so it doesn't solve your problem), Edit-on Pro (java 1.3 so it works on Macs) and Xopus (almost ready)...
Xopus is the most promising (from what I gathered) but Edit-on Pro is a stable and tested solution available right now. A good list of thru the web (ttw) editors is also available. #

A working XHTML 2.0 page
It works in IE6, Opera 6 and Mozilla. It is styled with CSS. I had to do some coding to get the links to work. For IE6 I made an HTC behavior that creates handlers for mouse events (yuck). For Mozilla I made an XBL binding that adds XLink attributes. And Opera 6 has CSS extensions for links. Being allowed to make every element a link makes the html code very clean. Sections structure the page very well. And the navigation lists are perfect for weblogs. So don't say it's just markupbation or that we'll be stuck with XHTML 1.1 for quite a while

Burningbird: Weblogging Consortiums
I am not unmindful of what Blogger has provided to the community these last few years -- a free and easy way for webloggers, especially new webloggers, to get their voices online. However, I do believe it's time for the community of webloggers to take some of this burden away from Blogger. Before we lose a whole lot of webloggers when Blogspot goes down for the count.
An effective approach would be to create Weblogging Consortiums -- groups of webloggers who band together to lease a server for an entire year, thereby sharing the costs of the server among themselves. In particular, webloggers wanting to move to Movable Type 2.2 with MySql support have been faced with increased costs, especially if they're using Windows-based systems. Shared space would be very cost effective. #
