Bill Gates stories

Brent Simmons, great at both code and words, published a nice one. (link via Dave, who finds ALL the cool stuff)

Here's one of mine:

It's early in the wee am hours, back in the spring of 1989. I'm working way-too-long hours at BigCo. For a break during this particular all-nighter, I take off roller-skating about the campus.

I'm listening to Mitch Ryder and the Detroit Wheels on the walkman. (highly recommended for rollin', BTW). After warming up in the big outdoor parking lots and curving roadways, I head off to the parking garage beneath Building 9. A great place to skate, smooth smooth concrete, ramps and obstacles, wide-open spaces and narrow little scary spots.

Alluva sudden, I feel a gaze. I stop, turn around, and here comes a security guy.

"Who are you ? What are you doing ?"

"I'm Bill Gates. I own this place. I'm roller-skating".

(Bill's office was in Building 9)

Put the headphones back on, and rolled away. No further problems that night.

Internet Borders ?? Hah !

The Washington Post is running a scare story:

Rise of Internet 'Borders' Prompts Fears for Web's Future

Pardon me if I scoff.

The net is all about route-arounds. It's deep in its genes. Block me here, I dart there. Take out there, I go elsewhere. That's why it's called 'the web'.

Sorry, control-freaks. You lose, we win. Game over.  10:55:11 PM
