Home Google

Google is brilliant.

I live in Google. I love Google. It makes up for SO many deficiencies of the web. I can find anything, quickly, with a broadband net connection + Google.

Google also saved the UseNet archives. Google lets me find pictures as well as text. Google searches PDFs and other hidden shmootz. Google watches the blogs, Google scans the news.

Google loves the web, and we love it back.

I want to Googleize my home computers. Windows' Find:Files or Folders and Mac's Sherlock are ridiculous in comparison to Googleation. I've got hundreds of gigabytes, all dense and twisted, I need Google here now on THIS system.

ps -- Google won the Scripting News readers' Best Weblog Utility/ Distraction award. I love Dave's teaser: "If you knew you were going to be stranded on a deserted island and could only take one website with you, which would it be?" ubetcha, Google it'd be. Deep bows and homage.

POTS and BNBs

They killed the network my original satellite modem was connected to. So now I've got to install the "upgrade", which is to the original as a WinModem is to a real modem.

In the meantime, I'm using a USB-port POTS modem.

(It's the Hawking PN580U, fine little device, I travel with one in my pc repair kit, its drivers just WORK (as opposed to first USB POTS modem, the D-Link DSB-560, which has those fussy flakey i'm-here-i'm-not-here drivers that are designed by .... SATAN !!!)

But the download speed's 21.6 kbps, versus the satellite's 300 to 1000 kbps (fastest for the first megabyte, slowing to 300 on multi-meg downloads).

I'd forgotten how slow things can go.

If the satellite downgrade modem install weren't such a bad-news-bear [BNB], I'd do it right away, but it IS such a beast, from all reports, so I need a clear 4 to 6 hour block of time, which won't come for a coupla daze.

Good to remember how normals cybernate.

(Radio 8, by the way, STILL ROX, even over POTS)

Blogger of the Year

If it's not Susan Kitchens of 2020 Hindsight I'll eat my Radio.

I love that blog. Thanks SK for the continual excellence.
