Wireless Blogging:  What's This About?

As head of Wireless Internet & Mobile Computing, a wireless data consulting company, I'm always on the lookout for interesting wireless data products, services, technologies, etc.  As a lover of the Internet, I'm always on the lookout for interesting Internet products, services, etc.,  As a lover of reading and writing (well, sometimes; writing can be hard!), I'm always on the lookout for interesting writing.

Wireless blogging is about all of those things: the integration of wireless communications with Weblogs.

Much to my surprise, and pleasure, within days after Radio Userland 8.0 was released, a few innovative souls began posting Weblog messages via SMS on their cellular phones.  Even before 8.0 was released, Webloggers used wireless LANs (802.11) networks to post entries about conferences.

So wireless blogging already exists.  I like the concept...and the reality.  In fact, I've got some interesting ideas for promoting and using wireless blogging.  I'm not terribly excited about using a cellular phone keypad to send a 160-character SMS message!  I get carpal tunnel syndrome just thinking about that.

But if you use a PDA -- with Graffiti, an on-screen virtual keyboard or a phyiscal keyboard (such as the Stowaway) -- or a notebook computer teamed with a wireless LAN card or even a cellular connection, you've got a useful way to post entries in real-time.  Bluetooth systems, for shorter range access, might be useful, too, perhaps sooner in Europe than in the U.S.

I'm pursuing this wireless blogging -- and promoting it to some People Who Can Make It Happen -- for a large, influential wireless conference in a couple of months.  I'm also researching all the Weblogs where people have used wireless to publish their entries.

This could get rather interesting.
