if we could finagle 'alt' tags for the permalink and archive graphics, and a 'text/javascript' inside the javascript tag, i could achieve 100% HTML 4.01 Transitional with this design.  AND i believe i need just a couple of little tweaks to get CSS 1.0 validation.    Still working on it.
