My Uninterruptable Power Supply Isn't
I learned last night that my UPS isn't as uninterruptable as it used to be. We had a mild thunderstorm roll through last night. I chose to not shut down the computer in spite of the lightning as it wasn't all that bad. A bit after 10:00 pm, a lightning bolt hit fairly close (I still count seconds after I see the lightning until I hear the thunder to estimate how far away the storm is) and the power went out, taking the computer down immediately.
So now I'm looking for a new UPS. I can't complain about the last one. I bought it from Best Buy or CompUSA for less than $60 just to give me enough time to shut down in a controlled way when power goes out and it worked out just fine for four years or so.
The power came back on about 2:00 am. Hats off to the folks at Alliant Energy, as they fixed whatever had been zapped right in the middle of another thunderstorm. Four hours from power off to power restored on a Sunday night isn't bad at all.
That, and we had 3.75 inches of rain, according to my rain gage!
