I Want My RSS

Dave Winer used to be the CEO of Userland, the company that created the weblogging software I use.  He's now at Harvard educating the masses.  Dave has been the brunt of a fair amount of ill will lately from people who have decided to oppose the standard for Really Simple Syndication, the web content syndication format used by many weblogs, news sources, and news aggregators to easily share web content.

Robert Scoble, the person most responsible for my starting this weblog, is among many people who are supporting Dave and the RSS standard.  More specifically, he's among the many people who support the RSS standard remaining simple and not controlled solely by big corporations.

I support both Dave and the RSS standard, too.  I use RSS to supply feeds of this weblog as well as the daily scripture readings I post for people who want to read the Bible in a year.  I use RSS to bring in about 150 feeds from various news sources and weblogs in a format that lets me scan a lot of news in a very short time through my news aggregator.

The RSS format does what I need it to do.  It works for the purpose for which it was intended.  It works for millions of little people, just like me, who have weblogs.  I'm a nobody in the software industry and I'm sure that the big companies generally don't give a hoot what I think.  But my voice, combined with other nobodies who care, may at least give someone, somewhere cause to think before they try to push something we neither want nor need down our throats.
