Welcome back to the sixties folks.
Smash has a really good post up about the growing divide in the United States, one that definitely hearkens back to the 60's:
MIKE HENDRIX is also concerned about the ever-widening political divide in our nation, and worries that it might end in violence on our streets.

The Left has been spoiling for a real fight for years now, and they’re most likely going to get it. It’s the awful truth, and I don’t see anything standing in the way of it but the Left’s own innate sneaky cowardice. When push comes to shove, perhaps the Left will be willing to put down their Bushitler signs and go home peacefully. But they’re not the majority, they never will be, and the only way they can win is through deceit, disinformation, intimidation, and, ultimately, violence.
I honestly hope that it doesn’t come down to that. I still believe that most folks on both the left and the right (if we can define ourselves that simply) are good and decent people who would prefer to peaceably work through our differences. [LT SMASH]
It's an excellent post, IMO. This country is fully in the 70's again. The divide between the Right/Left/Republicans/Democrats has reached a low nadir. This sucks.
Go ahead and read through the comments on his site, there's some good stuff buried in all the dren.
So the question is, how do we get out of this?
No, the answer is not "Get out of Iraq" nor is it "Get Bush out of office". Although they are steps along the way.
The trick is, and I may betray myself by quoting George Carlin:
We need to focus on the things that bring us together, rather than the things that push us apart.
Some things:
Yeah, sure, I want George Bush fired, but certainly am glad that the people of Iraq will have a chance at a better life! He did the right thing - just for the wrong reasons. That's why he really deserves jail, but in true American fashion, we'll let him off with being fired. I can live with that.
Aside from the idiot trying to make "Michael Moore Hates America", someone really does need to do an exposé on Michael Moore. Let's face it, while it was funny when he was doing it to CEO's and challenging them, he's a hellova lot less interesting when he's slapping around low-paid functionaries.
I am made very uncomfortable seeing all these damned signs at anti-war/peace protests in foreign languages. Why do you have to hold up a sign that says "Pace"? IMO, you're just trying to show off, and doing a bad job of it. Is "Peace" too poor a word for you? If so? WTF are you doing at a PEACE rally!?!
Please ignore this if you are yourself Italian or the rally is in Europe/Italy. :)
(Note: I have no problem with foreign languages, it's just the motives behind many of the usages of them in rallies make me suspicious of them. By way of example, the above sign would be cool if it had the words for "peace" in several languages. That's more of a uniting thing.)
Stop reveling in your opponents humanity, when it comes to foibles. We all belch, we all trip and we all say the wrong thing at the wrong time and wish we could just die right here and now. It's fine to laugh or chuckle, but to use these things as ammunition.... To focus overmuch on these things betray a meanness both of demeanor and spirit and lessen you, not them. Stop it. All of you. (Myself included)
Anyways, that's a starter list.
