2003 Series

July 18: O' Brother, Where Art Thou?
Rated: PG - 13
Actors: George Clooney, John Turturro, Tim Blake Nelson, John Goodman, Holly Hunter
Synopsis:In the Depression-era deep South, three escapees from a Mississippi prison chain gang: Everett Ulysses McGill (George Clooney), sweet and simple Delmar (Tim Blake Nelson), and the perpetually angry Pete (John Turturro) attempt to return home. Still in shackles, they make a hasty run for their lives and end up on an incredible journey filled with challenging experiences and colorful characters in this modern-day spin on Homer's The Odyssey.

Aug. 8: Mo' Better Blues
Sponsored by The San Jose Jazz Society
Rated: R
Actors: Denzel Washington, Spike Lee
Synopsis: With MO' BETTER BLUES, Spike Lee continues with his specialty, plunging movie audiences deep into portions of African-American culture, through this tale of a man (Denzel Washington) whose single-minded concentration on his music leaves many, especially the women in his life, scrambling for his attention.

Sept. 19: Amelie
In French With English Subtitles
Rated: R
Actors: Audrey Tautou, Mathieu Kassovitz, Rufus, Yolande Moreau, Artus de Penguern, Urbain Cancelier
Synopsis: Amelie is a shy young woman who has a love of life's small pleasures. While she takes joy in the slightest things in life she is still looking for love as well as the course her life should take. Her slightly dysfunctional family have fostered her tentative interaction with her neighbors as well as the customers of the Parisian restaurant where she waitresses. When she successfully tracks down the owner of a box of boyhood treasures that she found in her house she begins to believe she might have the power to influence more of the people around her. This fairy-tale style film follows the heroine until she finds love and her place in life even though everyone around her has always underestimated her.

Oct. 3: The Seedling: The Art History of Surfing
Sponsored by the San Jose Museum of Art
Rated: Not Rated
Featuring: Devon Howard, Jimmy Gamboa, Dane Peterson, Brittany Quinn, Seitaro Nakamura, Kassia Meador, Joel Tudor, Skip Frye, Maureen Drummy, Josh Farberow, and Dylan Jones
Synopsis:The Seedling is a documentation of a small pod of Californian logriders drawing out a beautiful line that was dropped off in the late '60s," states Mono Man, the frugal narrator of Thomas Campbell's critically acclaimed surf movie. Captured entirely on 16 mm film - in vibrant black and white, color and tints - the Seedling is an original study of the classic, single-fin style from California's lower region. Filmed across the globe with artistic flair and fantastic cinematography in a variety of angles, speeds and lights, it includes some vintage '50s footage of Donald Takayama, a gorgeous "underwater intermission" and some outrageous bits of comic relief.
