On this day, in 1967, the Apollo 1 tragedy occured. Roger White, Gus Grisson, and Ed Chaffee lost their lives in a horrific fire that caused NASA engineers to radically redesign the way the capsule door opens.

I was privileged to go to the site last year in August. I didn't expect to go there, because it wasn't advertised on the tour ("NASA Then and Now"), so it was a complete surprise when the bus pulled up to the launch site. If you go to the Kennedy Space Center and they are offering the tour, don't even think about it. Just pay the fee and go.
