I also looked today at ruby, which seems another possible, very elegant alternative, but it has a narrower community than python's (so less books, libraries, etc...) and I have no idea of its performance. Ease of programming is important, but reasonnable compute speed is a requirement (the very reason why I now avoid Mma for large projects).
