I've just returned from Pottersville! NJ, to be precise, about fifty miles due west of the Holland Tunnel, for those in the know. My parents moved there in the mid-eighties. This would be pretty big news out there; they've been doing a nod-nod wink-wink kind of tribute to the movie every year for the december holidaze. The bridge is quite telling. BTW... my cube had unexpected heat problems and as a result I've been post-less for a week. Sorry for the interruption. Here is a big question: "what is the copyright status of 'It's a Wonderful Life' ?
The story surrounding this is that the copyright renewal on this fantastic movie lasped in 1974 due to a failure to renew. As a result, it was played on dozens of cable channels at numerous times during the entire xmas season. If there ever was an example of what happens with IP that is allowed to go to the public domain after a generous number of years, this is it. The story was able to touch millions.
Of course, that didn't mean that the Hollywood copyright cartel (the true pirates in intellectual property) wouldn't find a way to re-assert a copyright. Now it only plays in one time slot on NBC (from what I could find). If you miss it, too bad.
We all live in Pottersville. [John Robb's Radio Weblog]
