If it is to be argued that Bush has done well regarding
the ongoing battle with terrorism, it must be argued that
anyone else in his position would have faired at least as
poorly.
That does not seem to be a winning argument.
Few other people would have gotten us into the current mess in
Iraq. Common sense would have prevented it. As citizens we were mislead,
lied to, regarding the reason for going to war. There was not a compelling
reason to initiate the war. Without the war against Iraq, the United States
and outr allies would be in better shape than now.
Nor is there any appreciable long term benefit to come out of the war.
Net gain - little or nothing. Net loss - potentially extraordinary.
The negative impact of the war against Iraq is evident. There
is more fervent hatred of the U.S. than ever before. Our country's
moral and political standing in the world is deservedly dimenished.
Allies have become antagonists. Our economy, struggling without the
war, was burdened by additional 100s of billions of dollars of debt
with the final cost not yet understood.
The war against Iraq was a red herring in the ongoing war against terrorism.
The President has led us to a worse place than we have have been at
without him.
