You know, there might be a more sensitive way to conduct an effective war on terrrorism. It might be possible to defend the country without negating any of the core principles of the Constitution or the Bill of Rights. It might be possible to detain people only when there is good reason and then to give those detainees access to legitimate legal recourse. It might be possible to conduct the defense of the country without becoming, 'Big Brother' in the Orwellian sense. It might be possible to fight the war on terror without violating the rules of the Geneva Convention -- especially given that torture is demonstrated as not helpful in extracting information. It might be possible to wage a more effective war by engendering world-wide co-operation rather than fear. Who knows what insights might be useful if originated from a perspective which embraced humanity.
Dick Cheney's comments seem to be illuminated by the expression: 'If the only tool you have is a hammer, every problem looks like a nail.'

This seems to go along hand-in-hand with the recent observations of the timing of terror alerts. Kerry attacks the Bush administration's policy on lower-cost imported drugs, magically new "chatter" is reported saying that imported drugs are an important target of the terrorists. Maybe there is nothing to this, but it smacks of additional politicizing of the war or terrorism.
Wednesday: CBS Kerry Makes Pitch To Seniors [attacks Bush on prescription drugs]"..I call on the president to do what he should have done in the first place," Kerry said. "I call on the president to get out of the way of Americans being able to import drugs from Canada at a lower price..."
Thursday: CNN FDA fears drugs a terror target Cues from chatter" gathered around the world are raising concerns that terrorists might try to attack the domestic food and drug supply, particularly illegally imported prescription drugs, acting Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Lester M. Crawford says.

I cannot call this the worst case scenario, but it is certainly a terrible scenario.
