livestock, dairy and poultry outlook monthly USDA ERS report

Milk production, pounded by low milk prices, has seen growth slow considerably. April output in the 20 major States was within 1 percent of a year earlier for the first time since October 2001. However, easing in milk production owed more to very weak growth in milk per cow than to a turnaround in milk cow numbers. A likely recovery in milk per cow probably will offset some of the projected loss of milk cows in coming months.

No Common Ground on Agriculture at WTO
SHARM EL-SHEIK, Egypt (AP) - Frustrated by inaction, the head of the World Trade Organization said Saturday he hasn't seen the ``political will'' among government ministers to resolve differences over opening international trade on farm products.

Three months after they missed a self-imposed deadline to agree on a blueprint for agriculture, the ministers at an informal meeting of World Trade Organization members struggled to find any common ground over the future of trade in agricultural goods.

"Forages return more money directly to Arizona producers than any other crop, including cotton and produce. The value of all hay alone produced in Arizona was $183 million in 2001(according to USDA figures), about twice value as much as cotton, while farmers themselves realize only a minor portion of the value of the produce crop. The value of our silage crops adds to the Arizona forage total value. And, forage production is increasing! I urge every Arizona forage producer to give this new organization your support with both membership and participation. Go get a neighbor to join up, too. Let's take charge of our futures by defining our products, supporting common objectives and sharing information." -- Lee Banning President
