Everyone Pays Price for Backroom Water Grab From Farmers
By Lloyd Allen, Lloyd Allen is president of the Imperial Irrigation District board of directors and is serving his fifth term on the board. He has farmed in the Imperial Valley for 44 years.

Thanks to the Department of the Interior and the Metropolitan Water District, millions of Southern Californians may soon feel the effect of new water wars in Southern California. In moves eerily reminiscent of Los Angeles' famous water grab in the Owens Valley a century ago, the Interior Department and the MWD have mixed backroom dealings with water rights and turned their public trust responsibilities upside down.

Remote Sensing May Make Forage Analysis Faster, Easier
"An Agricultural Research Service study has revealed little difference between forage nutrient data collected in the field by a portable lightwave reading machine and information obtained through conventional lab analysis."

This might have some possibilities for use in Alfalfa.

"Forages return more money directly to Arizona producers than any other crop, including cotton and produce. The value of all hay alone produced in Arizona was $183 million in 2001(according to USDA figures), about twice value as much as cotton, while farmers themselves realize only a minor portion of the value of the produce crop. The value of our silage crops adds to the Arizona forage total value. And, forage production is increasing! I urge every Arizona forage producer to give this new organization your support with both membership and participation. Go get a neighbor to join up, too. Let's take charge of our futures by defining our products, supporting common objectives and sharing information." -- Lee Banning President
