Southern California Hay Prices

Dec 05, 2003

California Weekly Hay Report

Southern California: FOB Barn/Stack: 20,165 Tons Delivered: 1,900 Compared to last week, Premium and Supreme Alfalfa not fully tested. Demand good for any supplies that can be found. Supplies are limited and buyers have been out checking stacks for any current or early year production that might test for milking cows. Fair and Good Alfalfa steady. Demand light to moderate, supplies moderate to heavy. Retail and stable hay fully steady. Demand moderate to good, supplies moderate. Seeing more interest in barn hay now and the outside hay getting cleaned up. Production in Antelope Valley area pretty much over with now. Exporters looking for hay off and on, have been fairly quiet. Weather pattern has cooled off with a few frosty overnights, and warming up during day time.

"Forages return more money directly to Arizona producers than any other crop, including cotton and produce. The value of all hay alone produced in Arizona was $183 million in 2001(according to USDA figures), about twice value as much as cotton, while farmers themselves realize only a minor portion of the value of the produce crop. The value of our silage crops adds to the Arizona forage total value. And, forage production is increasing! I urge every Arizona forage producer to give this new organization your support with both membership and participation. Go get a neighbor to join up, too. Let's take charge of our futures by defining our products, supporting common objectives and sharing information." -- Lee Banning President
