Transit-village critics to converge at public hearing

By Peter Felsenfeld, CONTRA COSTA TIMES

Who could possibly object to a smart-growth scheme designed to reduce traffic by placing homes and businesses near transportation?

Perhaps elected officials in Pittsburg could.

Concerns about the region's latest stab at transit-oriented development could surface Tuesday afternoon when the Contra Costa Board of Supervisors holds a public hearing to consider a transit village proposed for the Pittsburg-Bay Point BART station area.

The hearing is scheduled for 1 p.m. in the board chamber, 651 Pine St., Martinez.

The 295-acre area's specific plan, which has been approved by the East County Regional Planning Commission, calls for multi-family housing, as well as commercial and office development, on parcels belonging to several owners.

>>>This could make the entire Shaping Our Future project irrelevant.  If cities are not going to embrace "smart growth" - and there are very good reasons - what's the point of spending $750,000 + to draw up a plan?
