Justify your Documentation

Here begins the heresy. If nobody ever uses what you write, why are your writing it?

Find out who reads the stuff you write. Ask them why they read it, then tailor your writing for their reasons.

Next, find out who is not reading your stuff, but should be. Ask them why they are not reading it, then figure out how to get them stuff they will read.

Finally, find out what other people are writing, and read it.

If you are a manager, and your folks are doing a good job, then define the process to follow the current flow of knowledge.

If they are not doing a good job, then first look at what is blocking the knowledge transfer.   3:53:59 PM  permalink
