Yesterday was a lot of fun. I should have filled in some more details about where we are, who we are and something more about the trip.
First of all, where are we? The lighthouses that I'll be showing you pictures of are mostly from the New England area. That would include Massachussettes, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Maine and Vermont.
Who goes on this Lighthouse trips? Maureen (my wife), Linda and Darlene (two friends of ours) and me. We take four digital cameras (all Olympus), a laptop computer (an iBook) and a GPS (global positioning system). The laptop is great for downloading pictures during the trips between lighthouses, using with the GPS to get to the lighthouses and burning CDs of the pictures after we get done.
Let's go back to yesterday.
We left our house around 9:30am to go pickup Linda and Darlene. Our first stop was Cape Code Lighthouse in Truro - it took about two hours to get there. The weather started cloudy and seemed great for dramatic pictures of lighthouses. As we went east and south, the clouds slowly disappeared.
We thought that going nearly to the end of Cape Cod and working our way backwards down the cape would make the next set of trips for lighthouses easier. I would have gone all the way to the end of the Cape, but the three lighthouses at the end require a walk of about an hour for each one - this doesn't seem like a bright idea to do in the winter.
After Cape Code Light, we went looking for food as we were going to Nauset Light. Unfortunately, everywhere we looked was closed for the season. We saw the signed that suggested that the Three Sisters Lights were in that area, but we needed to find a bathroom.
I'd've thought that finding any reasonable food and a bathroom should be easy. Nearly anywhere in the rest of the world this is easy. However, on Cape Cod, it is nearly impossible as far as I could determine. In desperation we stopped at a place said it was a pizza barn (no restrooms there). Across the street was another place that had restrooms, but I didn't trust much else there.
Slightly refreshed, we went onward to Chatham. Watching for reasonable food all along the way. We found nothing open. I was beginning to think that the folks on the Cape just don't eat out at all. The Chatham Light is a nice lighthouse. We saw a couple of guys diving into the ocean while we were there. It was way too cold for normal folks to even think about swimming. Those two guys came out pretty quick.
We wandered down the road a while to try to find Hardings Light. The problem with Hardings Light is that you need to walk across quite a distance of beech to get near it. We found the road that gave us a view of Hardings Light and so I stopped the car, climbed down the hill and took some distance shots - not a great picture, but we considered seeing it a success.
Hardings Light takes our total number of lighthouses that we've spotted to: 49
Where did we eventually find reasonable food? At a 99 about thirty minutes away from the Cape. Does anyone know of any good places to eat on Cape Cod? If you do, please send me good directions - thanks!
