Google Degraded? Geeks Aghast. Did Google lower its standards for ranking Web pages on its search engine? Its filtering of spam sites and doorway pages appears to be less than what it used to, observers say. By Paul Boutin. [Wired News]
OK, I'm only going to say this once:
Get over it.
PageRank isn't about being "fair." PageRank isn't even about being "relevant," except insofar as "relevance" is a statistical concept that can be modeled using a combination of eigenvectors and graph theory. And PageRank certainly isn't about being "popular," once again, except insofar as "popularity" is a statistical, etc. etc.
The rules of showing up on Google are the same as the rules of showing up in print: write what you know. If you do that, other people will talk about you. Some of those people will themselves be heavyweights in writing, and they exert a greater gravitational effect. Lather, rinse, and repeat.
And don't worry—if obvious spam etc. is showing up near the top in Google, you can rest assured that the fine folks at Google will revise their processes yet again to help minimize the problem. They have some awfully smart people there—I recommend trusting them.
