A quick little journey through the blogscape this morning with my first
cuppa.
It starts over at Halley's place where she is just getting
ready for the start of school. She's talking about the commercials
showing how excited all the kids are about going back to school and how
it's really the parents that should be getting new clothes and whooping
it up. I'm not sure what kind of single parent world she's in but in
mine back to school just means more stuff piled on top of an already
busy schedule. Getting kids ready for school before the ride comes at
6:35 am to get to school by 7:00am and then getting child number two
ready so I can leave for work and still get there 20 minutes late.
Then there's the monthly PTA meetings and Academy meetings and fund
raisers and remembering the check for picture day and remembering to
make lunches and remembering to pick them up after school and taking
them to after school activities and, and, and...
And as most of the world is just getting started preparing for the
school year we are already int our third week of school.
I must say though that the girls really did seem excited about going
back to school. Well, maybe they were just excited about buying new
"knee sock" and Hollister and Aeropostile and Pac Sun and Forever 21
and, and, and... I still remember how much fun I had going through the
Chandlers Stationary store in Highland Park. There were all kinds of
really cool stuff. Composition books, assignment books, pencils, oh and
the giant rainbows of color in the cray-pas sets. You should
see Chelsey going up and down the school supply aisles with her supply
list looking for just the right set of colored pencils (even though I
have two thousand color pencils at home from the previous 7 years of
school supplies) and psychedelic pattern covered composition books. I'm
pretty sure Chelsey got that from me.
Which takes to my next stop where Halley points me to This Fish Needs A
Bicycle who is talking about being a Girl.
You'll have to imagine the Beatles song
playing in the background unless of course you have the old Rubber Soul
album handy to throw on the turntable, as I can't really bring myself to
play the Britney Spears song, plus I don't have the Britney Spear song
to listen to.
Anyway now that the music is playing, the thing that hit a chord :) with
me about the Girl vs.Woman thing is a thought that I've mentioned before
about looking in the mirror and seeing this 40 something man and felling
like a teenager inside. It is something I've been thinking about more
and more as I try to figure out what it means to be a widower/single
'man' when I still feel like a 'boy'.
And as the strains of Good Day
Sunshine play in the headphones it's time leave the blogosphere and
get on with the day.
