What makes you a mom

Chelsey was on a field trip Friday.  She called from the bus on the way home sounding rather excited about something.  She was telling me we needed to take another one of her friends home because her mother had to go to the hospital.  I wasn't sure what exactly was going on and whether I would have enough time to take her home, but I felt like I needed to something to help this little girl.  I had already volunteered to take one girl home.  I tried to get more details and found out that her mother had kidney stones and they only wanted me to take the girl to our house until they could come and get her.  That sounded much better than taking her home as I wasn't sure where she lived and I still had to go pick up Lindsey at the rink.

I went to the school before the field trip buses got there and parked the car.  I got out and waited for the buses thinking about what must be going through the poor little girl's mind.  I saw the girls getting off the bus and started walking over to them.  She looked so lost and scared, tears streaming down her cheeks.  I went up quickly and gave her my best motherly hug.  I feel like I have officially become a mom.  The person that looks out for other kids as if they were my own.  She perked up a bit and we walked to the car the girls figuring out who would sit where.  They began to talk about what they did on the field trip and I think she was able to distract herself from her concern about her mother for a few moments.
