Complete genome map 'in 2003'. The sequencing of the human genome will be finished by next year, a
leading scientist says at a conference in China. [BBC News: sci/tech] An interesting factoid from the article, humans have 30,000 genes. That is only 6 times the number in E. coli. Chimps have very similar sequence, greater than 90% identical. So why are we sentient and they are not? It turns out, its the pattern of gene expression. We use these genes in different ways and that makes all the difference.
