"I came to the conclusion that at some point our civilization will either value excellence in information technology, or will die. We're building so many systems on the little ones and zeroes, but yet our universities turn out crappy developers with no ladder to climb, few real heroes to look up to, no bonafide life saving techie role models." [Scripting News] Why single out universities? Industry is for the most part uninterested in investing seriously in education. Medical education would not work if it were done just in classrooms, without access to and participation in working medical facilities. Industry-university relations in the computing area tend to be focused on short-term benefits (public image, funding, product promotion), not on long-term development of a profession.
