Dan Bricklin: Software That Lasts 200 Years. [Scripting News] I just skimmed it, but it deserves more careful reading. One immediate thought beyond Briklin's many good observations is that we don't really understand or teach about long-running software, with respect to resource and change management and surgery on a live system. These issues are dealt with in practice, sometimes well (deep space missions, Google,...), but they aren't central to computing as a field.
