Most companies of any size have computer service organizations that keep everything running and, as part of their work, deal with fighting Windows security issues. It is added work, but for many it is in the noise - they aren't adding additional people to deal with the added burden. [tingilinde] I wish it were in the noise. At the beginning of this semester we had several problems with course-related software and systems because software updates were delayed by urgent virus and DoS attack-fighting work during the summer break. Penn has smart, dedicated IT staff, but it's just beyond their numbers to keep up with the malware onslaught while also managing a complex educational and research environment. Adding staff, even if we could find people of the quality we have, which is not easy, would increase our costs, reflected in tuition and costs to research grants. Increases in those costs are subject to very critical appraisal by parents and legislators, who typically do not have any idea of the difficulty of running a smooth, up-to-date educational IT service.
