It was a very nice winter day in Philadelphia today, cool but not brutal, sunny. We needed to do some shopping downtown. Here's the crop that resulted from a (rare) visit to Tower Records, plus last Saturday's visit to AKA Music. New (and old) music:
  • Bach/Webern: Ricercar. Christoph Poppen, Müncehener Kammerorchester, Hilliard Ensemble
  • Chopin Scherzi/Impromptus. Yundi Li
  • Escalator Over the Hill. Carla Bley, Paul Haines, and the Jazz Composers Orchestra 1971. I have the original LP for this, and I had a CD version that was stolen from my son in college several years ago. It went out of print, but not it is back. Uneven, but still very worthwhile. The players an amazing collection of Miles and Weather Report alumni and fellow travelers, including Dewey Redman, Don Cherry, Roswell Rudd, Jon McLaughlin, Charlie Haden, Paul Motian, Gato Barbieri, and many others.
  • #61/91. Paul Motian and the Electric BeBop Band with Joshua Redman. Listening to it right now. Fierce, imaginative versions of Parker, Gillespie, and Monk standards.
  • The Holy la. Steve Lacy trio. Just listened to it. A keeper.
  • El Cant de la Sibilla. Montserrat Figueras, Jordi Savall, Capella Reial de Catalunya. Another Figueras/Savall wonder.
  • Works for Me. John Scofield. Not as memorable as EnRoute or the amazing ScoLoHoFo OH!, but still lots of fun.
  • The Hudson Project. John Abercrombie, Peter Erskine, Bob Mintzer, John Patitucci.
  • The Classic Guide to Strategy, Volume Three. John Zorn.
