Nevados de ChillánMy knee injury from last summer in Argentina (hitting powder-covered rock-solid debris in Cerro Bayo) seems finally on the mend after a successful operation. This week is Spring break at Penn. I skied in wonderful places, including Alpine glaciers and the Tioga Pass backcountry, the last four Spring breaks, but the knee is not ready for serious use yet. So I dream of this summer in South America, maybe climb the stunning Nevados de Chillán again.

Star Ali Farka Toure to be buried: One of Africa's best known musicians, Ali Farka Toure, is to be buried in his home town of Niafunke in northern Mali. (Via BBC News | News Front Page | World Edition.)

To think that after his unreleased solo album, there will only be silence... Other gifted Mali musicians continue to create great music, but he was really special. I've never been to Mali, still his Niafunke brings me there in imagination and feeling time and time again.
