AT&T Labs vs. Google Labs: not your grandfather's R&D: Is good old-fashioned R&D dead? Maybe not, but it has definitely changed over the years. (Via Ars Technica.)

One of the best summaries I've read of the current challenges to long-term research. A few minor issues. It is more positive about the current state of telecom-company research than I would be. It does not discuss academic federal funding, which has its own issues. It does not look into new research models that are neither "golden age" Bell Labs nor 1-2 year horizon research, but instead creative interactions between long-term investigation and constant product improvement, both based on the huge real-life experiments that are our current internet services.
