The other book that needs to be read is John McPhee's Rising From the Plains - part of a wonderful series on the geological history of America. [Steve Crandall's Surf Report 2.0] I wish Assembling California had been out when I lived there. It is a wonderful introduction to a very complex geology, suggesting many detours along the I-80 corridor. The California geology I see most these days is that of the Northern Sierra crest: granites, volcanism, glaciation, hopefully surrounded by lots of snow. Castle Peak, where I was a couple of weeks ago, is a perfect example of eroded stratovolcano with several exposed plugs. 11:55:37 AM |
