Just read: A Short Walk in the Hindu Kush, by Eric Newby. The author is working in Londons fashion business in 1957 when he gets a contract to write (this) book on mountain climbing in Afghanistan. He gets together with a friend of his and with minimal preparation -- a short class in mountain climbing -- and bad planning -- woefully inadequate shoes and supplies -- they head off. It is a terrific story, well, honestly, and humorously told, and a great picture of the region 45 years ago, a world both there and here that's different than it is now. Here's a link to a good page about it at Amazon, and some copies at Alibris.
