Matala had sandstone cliffs peppered with caves which attracted self-proclaimed "freaks" from Europe and the US in the 1960s.
Matala was also home to Red Beach, a nudist resort later to be written about by Bob Dylan.
The village of Matala, overlooking a clear, turquoise sea, was also a bolt-hole for the occasional Vietnam veteran.
