Think Positively and Live Longer

"Thinking positively about getting older extends one's life by seven-and-one half years, which is more than the longevity gained from low blood pressure or low cholesterol or by maintaining a healthy weight, abstaining from smoking and exercising regularly, a study by a Yale researcher has found. "

Belleau Wood commemorates 9-11

"ABOARD USS BELLEAU WOOD AT SEA -- More than 500 Sailors and Marines aboard USS Belleau Wood (LHA 3) commemorated the one-year anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks Sept. 6 by spelling out the now famous quote from Todd Beamer, 'Let's roll.' "

Thanks to Middle East Realities for the link.

DCjazz, Washington DC's online jazz community

"Created for the jazz enthusiast and newcomer, DCjazz takes you on a virtual tour behind the scenes, on stage and into the musical heartbeat of Washington area's leading performing artists and rising new stars."

For some reason, I was not able to subscribe to their mailing list.  (The script returned a 404 page not found error when I tried to submit information.  Perhaps this should not be a surprise, since they seem to be using a Microsoft server.)

However, this appears to be a very rich and interesting site, with information about local artists and samples of their music (along with an opportunity to buy CDs).

Geoffrey Wheatcroft reviews Thomas Friedman's Longitudes and Attitudes in the New York Times:

"'Longitudes and Attitudes'' is a collection of columns, from December 2000 to this past July, broken by September's great caesura, and including material from his diary, notes made but not used as he traveled to the Persian Gulf, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Indonesia, India, Saudi Arabia, London, Brussels. . . .

"For years, Friedman's big idea has been free enterprise in its new form of globalization: ''the inexorable integration of markets, transportation systems and communication systems to a degree never witnessed before,'' which he believed would solve most of the world's ills. Not that ''the maximum of intercourse between nations'' was a new notion, or a bad one. Long before we had heard of the Web, Richard Cobden put it splendidly in 1850 when he said that ''the progress of freedom depends more upon the maintenance of peace, the spread of commerce and the diffusion of education, than upon the labors of cabinets and foreign offices.'"

Both Friedman's idea that commerce cures all ills and his prediction of coming disaster in the Middle East are profoundly disconcerting. Naturally, I am adding this book to my list of books to read.

Gutting the Federal Depository Library Program?.

Taking Out the GPO. The OMB says closing the GPO will save taxpayer money. Barbara Quint opines that not only will it cost taxpayers and libraries more money to obtain government documents, it will make them more difficult to find and track. [TVC Alert]

This is (or should be) a hot topic for all librarians.  The current FDLP could be improved, but what the OMB proposes results in even more government information going missing. [Leah's Law Library Weblog]

I have not yet read all the background material this post references, but on its face any proposal that undermines the GPO and Federal Depository Library program sounds like  a horrible idea.  Unfortunately, it also sounds completely consistent with the Bush administration's desire to govern in secret.

High Fat Diet: Count Calories and Think Twice

Jane Brody writes: "But in a major report last week, the Institute of Medicine of the National Academies emphasized the importance of balance of nutrients, with carbohydrates — starches and sugars — making up 45 percent to and 65 percent of daily calories and fats, 20 percent to 35 percent. The panel of 21 scientists also urged Americans to keep as low as possible their consumption of saturated fats, the foods Dr. Atkins recommends as his diet's main components." [New York Times]
