Mixed on Schickele
My wife and I disagree over Peter Schickele. I think that it's fascinating to learn how Camille Saint-Saens disguised the Dies Irae in the Danse Macabre by changing the key and the emphasis. I enjoy listening to his off the wall compositions when they help illustrate a practice such as a double bass line in eighteenth century composition. (I like these explanations especially because, despite being the son of a piano teacher, I am generally woefully ignorant about music.) My wife, on the other hand, can't stand Schickele's cornball humor, bad jokes, lame puns, and relentless self-aggrandizement. Her comment, "A lot of education is deadly dull, but Schickele is unusual in being actively annoying."1:06:59 PM #
