MSFT By The Numbers...
Look at the results from Microsofts latest 10q, and ponder the following numbers:

Microsoft Financials by Segment Q2 2003

  • Client Segement (Windows) $1.97 billion profit
  • Info Workers (Office, etc) $1.88 billion profit
  • Server Platforms $498 million profit
  • Business Solutions $93 million loss
  • Home & Entertainment (XBox) $348 million loss
  • MSN $157 million dollar loss
  • CE/Mobility $33 million loss (Q1 2003)

I couldn't find the Q2 numbers for CE/Mobility. Consider that Microsoft had a $4.35 billion dollar profit on $6.52 billion dollars of revenue. That means that they had a 66.7% margin! That margin is 79% if you only look at it's monopoly core. In other words the Microsoft tax is real, and due to their move to subscription based software they will make even more in the future.

The numbers also tell how bad Microsoft is at making money outside it's core...mj
