Who Lost China's Internet?
Without U.S. assistance, it will remain a tool of the Beijing government, not a force for democracy.

BEIJING -- It's not easy being the father of the Chinese Internet. Children are running by, boats are paddling, the smell of roast lamb fills the air, and Michael Robinson, a young American computer engineer, sits rigidly, facing an empty cafe on the shore of Qinghai Lake, speaking in a low voice of the crackdown. "What is better? Big brother Internet? Or no Internet at all?" Michael asks. [Weekly Standard]

...a facinating article that ask some painful questions. What are the moral implications of Cisco selling technology that the Chinese Government uses for censorship? What about Yahoo creating a system that panders to their need for censorship? It's an old argument -- "sure we sold them the gas. If we hadn't, someone else would have helped them kill the Jews... our shareholders would have been denied the profits"...ah morality, it's such a relative thing...it's the South Africa question all over...mj
