The title of this book is slightly misleading, or rather, it does not tell the whole story.
Foundation Dreamweaver UltraDev 4 is about how to use Macromedia’s database website development tool, but it is only for those who elect to use the ASP server model. Anyone wanting to know how to use JSP, ColdFusion, J2EE, PHP or any of the other server models is not going to get any value out of it.
If you are not an ASP true believer you would be better off taking a look at Dreamweaver UltraDev 4: The Complete Reference. That particular book does not cover all the current server models either, leaving out the immensely popular freeware product PHP, but at least it does not ignore everything other than ASP.
Paddock and Steel, the joint authors of Foundation Dreamweaver UltraDev 4, justify being one-eyed for Microsoft’s ASP with the statement that “the most common server model used for UltraDev is ASP with VBScript”. Yeah, right. Whatever you need to believe, guys. I have heard enough complaints from formerly hardcore ASP aficionados to believe that, if you give people a little information and knowledge that there are alternatives, then people will make intelligent choices. Like trying something other than ASP.
Stupidities aside, Foundation Dreamweaver UltraDev 4 is a pretty damned good book to start with, if you are a Windows user, can afford to pay the licencing fees for overpriced server products like SQL Server, and don’t mind your website running slow and going down fairly regularly.
If that is not you, then don’t bother.
