PHP Pocket Reference

Small Substitute For A Nonappearance

O’Reilly & Associates have earned their reputation of being THE book publishers for Unix aficionados. Over the years many of their books on open source software and related matters have become industry essentials, that nobody who is serious about a given language or open source operating system can afford to be without, despite often being priced well above the exchange rate in some territories.
So it comes as quite a surprise that O’Reilly has not produced an essential reference book on THE open source server-side, cross-platform, HTML embedded scripting language, PHP. Their Pocket Reference series is conceived as handy pocket-sized—110mm by 176mm—portable quick reminders of functions, syntax and structure, that ably support their big brothers on the same subject.
But in this case there is no big brother to support. Even more puzzling is the fact that the PHP Pocket Reference exclusively deals with PHP version 3, when other books that appeared at about the same time at least made mention of PHP 4.
O’Reilly made an impeccable choice when they commissioned an author to write this book, Rasmus Lerdorf, who created PHP as a way of making his personal home page more interactive way back in 1995. But when we will finally get to see the book the PHP Pocket Reference would appear to be the little brother of?
In the meantime, PHP Pocket Reference gets a low mark from me, for being out of date even when published and the fact that it is the companion to, well, nothing.
