My PC has been freezing, recently. I think the latest version of ZoneAlarm (v3.1.219.0) may have a bug. Several other users have found that vsmon.exe (or in some cases another process) hogs all the processor cycles and effectively stops the PC dead in its tracks. It may be conflict with another application (Outlook Express? Microsoft's Instant Messaging client?).
I've disabled ZoneAlarm, and now all is well. If it is ZoneAlarm's fault - it might be caused by some other nastiness, for all I know - I hope they release a fix soon. It's a good firewall, and the basic version is free, too.
UPDATE: Upgrading to the new release of ZoneAlarm (v3.1.395) seems to have fixed this problem. (I installed W2K SP3 at the same time, so you may need to try both updates.)
While I'm on the subject, I had some problems updating Radio.root through ZoneAlarm until I realised that the connection request wasn't being flagged up in an alert window. I had to manually identify the request and explicitly allow it. Updating is fine now.
