Web services lock-in
Web services are interoperable and in this sense they do support "open standards".  On the other hand the products used to wrap the application logic into web-services cover will have limited portability, and this characteristics will be making money to the vendors. The question, at least for me, remains what is meant by the "abstraction layer" in the article. [cnet & webservices.org]
