Microsoft Supports RSS
DaveNet: Microsoft Supports RSS.
"RSS has now passed that test. As we go forward, today's spec will represent the baseline, the unchanging, compatible core that all content systems, search engines, and news aggregators support. There may be other formats in the future, but they will not be called RSS. They may or may not be authored by the big companies. It won't matter as long as behind it all, the market that RSS defines continues to exist."

The truth of the matter is that even before Microsoft jumped on the RSS bandwagon it had a strong and loyal baking supported by a strong diverse community for over 4 years. With or without Microsoft the support of this format has and would have continued. If Microsoft jumps off the bandwagon (this would include changing it to fit their business objectives) this group will continue to be loyal to it to the puriest core (this is mainly because this group really understands where RSS fits into the big picture, believe in it, can think for themselves and are not followers).
I see this as more of a crossing point for RSS from early adoption to the mainstream. There is a large group of people that believe everyone is just hacking until Microsoft and other biggies jump on. They need and use Microsoft to tell them what's important and what's not. They find it safe to let Microsoft think for them. From this moment on this group of people will listen and ask questions about RSS and the main difference is their answers will come from Microsoft (We are not far from the day when RSS questions will be part of Microsoft cert testing).
What I find ironic and should be also mentioned at this point is that it was Netscape who started RSS over 4 years ago. It was Netscape's strength as an innovator and biggie status at the time that was instrumental in seeding RSS into "early adopter status".
The question I have is who if anyone has the reputation and has truely replaced Netscape in filling the role of "leading and informing the early adopters" on the Internet? Techblogs?
