Shift work in the spotlight:

Story

Corollary

Actually it seems to me that shift work is an excellent example of something for which corporations are not paying the true cost, and leaving society to foot the bill. So I think the Workmen's Compensation ruling is a good thing. Peter O'Brien is a local subhuman (oops, business person).

The Billionaire Boy's Club has a quote from Bill Gates. I think its time to stop calling them "governments" and come up with a new name - "Marketing Departments" springs to mind.

A Paul Krugman quote comes to mind - "In any case, by early 1993 political and economic stresses had made the solemnity of Maastricht seem almost comic. If there is a lesson here, it is that serious and dignified men and women in impressive international meetings may have absolutely no idea what they are talking about."

Rumor is that  Ars Digita is toast.

The rumor on fuckedcompany.com is that the services division is to be sold to Red Hat, and the rest is going to be wound up. Suggests to me that this was, in fact, the primary goal of Allen Shaheen - to get another job after aD disappeared. It was an agency problem .

Another rumor says that Philip Greenspun got $5 million when he was pushed out. From visionary to scumbag in a few short years. I sort of clued in when Eve Andersson referred to "Philip and Alex's Guide to Web Publishing" as marketing. I suppose so, but why believe any of it? At this point one has to assume that anything Mr. Greenspun writes is about as insightful as an Enron financial statement.

http://philip.greenspun.com/careers/ makes for good reading now that he's a professor at MIT. Sellout.

"The system needs to be reviewed thoroughly by a competent board that is totally gender-blind, armed with the authority and resources to recommend appropriate improvements and urge the responsible authorities to make the entire system fairer to all parties, and particularly the children, by removing from it systemic or stereotyped biases. "

My usual comment applies - allow me to disabuse you of the notion that you live in a democracy.

There's also a column in the opinion section (subscription only) where Bogdan Kipling exhorts King George to be tough on Ken Lay. Again I think the idealism of journalists is breathtaking. Ken Lay got George elected - George is going to get him off. Quid pro quo. Case closed. Remember where you heard it first.

That '80s show. Elephantine military budgets, feed-the-rich tax cuts, ballooning deficits! Democrats charge that Bush is trying to revive those glorious days of Reaganomics. But do they have they guts to fight him? [Salon.com]

One film to rule them all. Peter Jackson's "Fellowship of the Ring" pleases both Tolkien nuts and "Lord of the Rings" virgins. How did he pull off such an unlikely feat? [Salon.com]
