"No sense being pessimistic. It wouldn't work anyway. "

I've noticed a new trend in language use: Conveying information by asking and then answering your own questions. Here is an example from Andersen Chief Executive Joseph Berardino: "Will we lose business? Absolutely." Does this come from reading FAQs? Or maybe from writing FAQs?

Continuing with the referers obsession, I think I now "get it". What I really want to happen is that if I link to something on somebody else's weblog, their referers page reflects that link. But that isn't what happens. Instead, the referers page show how many times somebody has followed my link to that person's page. So if I want that person to see that I have a link to their page, I have to link to their page and then follow that link at least once. Then they will see my link on their referers page.

"Taking Bets -- My money's on the Netscape/Microsoft case being long and annoying, Microsoft making lots more money every quarter, security holes continuing to be found, Amazon slipping back into unprofitability without a holiday sales spike, peer-to-peer file sharing networks continuing to grow in defiance of clueless court orders, and Palm taking it on the chin with licensing. But, hey, I could be wrong."[TidBITS]

Clearly I am obsessed by the whole referers thing.

comment ()  8:02:56 PM  #

I'm really really really trying to keep my referers numbers untainted by my own link following, but apparently if I click on my "Home" link to the right (*you* can't see it if you are looking at my home page but I can) then that increments my referer count for this page to that page. Which boosts my overall score and bumps me up on the "Ranking by Page-Reads" list. I kinda think that's a bug but I'm not sure how you'd fix it. I can work around it by not clicking on that link. I don't really need to go to my home page and if I do, I can just go to it directly.

Perhaps the real question: Is a weblog a personal conversation I have with myself, or a community discussion? Or a little of both?

comment ()  7:42:07 PM  #

"What role should discussion (or some other community-feedback mechanism) play in [weblogs]?"[Dan Shafer's Weblog for Web Builders]: This is something that has puzzled me as well. I feel like I'm shouting blind, so to speak. There isn't really any good way for people to discuss any item in my weblog. People can quote me in their weblog and so our weblogs become the discussion. Maybe that is the "right way".

comment ()  7:39:07 PM  #

OK. I don't want to get too excited here, but I'm actually on the "Ranking by Page-Reads" page. I've only got 32 hits and I'm afraid most of them are from me. But it is just possible the somebody out there is watching :)

I'm trying to add a link to the left. So I think I need to make a post to get things streamed to my home page.

comment ()  5:32:09 PM  #

OK. I am a moron, obviously, but I did not understand how to interpret the numbers on the referers page. I guess weblogs.com is actually tracking click-throughs to pages and the number on the referers page tells you how many people are clicking through to your page from weblogs.com. If that is true, then I guess there are people actually taking a look. Unbelievable.

I bet you could blog with the new wireless Palm. Obviously you cold update your weblog by email with the thing. But I wonder if you could set up a reduced site and use the palm to update it.

I've been having trouble with Radio freezing on me. This hasn't happened before today and I'm wondering if it is a problem with the new picture tool.

This is a very cool looking site. And the author also does site design.

This is just plain scary.

Interesting Thingstodo.com fact about Arizona: "Arizona has more parks and national monuments than any other state, more mountains than Switzerland, and more golf courses than Scotland."

My family is planning a trip across the US by car this summer. We have a vague idea that we may try to follow old Route 66 for some of the trip. I plan to take the trip state-by-state and find cools things to see and do. Right now I'm working on Arizona. Oh, I probably should add that we live in California, so the trip starts there. My parents live in Cincinnati, so the trip will pass through there at some point. Chicago is most likely to be our real destination.

A picture named radioBadge.gifThis is a test of the new picture upload tool. Wow, it worked (did I ever doubt it would).

Palm launches new i705 handheld [MacNN]: This is beginning to smell like a cell phone replacement. You could buy this thing and use its instant messaging feature (it is AOL instant messaging, but thats OK) with the $19.99 monthly fee for Palm.net and you'd be able to communicate throughout the country for no other charge. You might be able to cancel your cell phone service at that point.

Apple ships iMac, takes 150,000 pre-orders [MacNN]: Wow!

comment ()  9:26:46 AM  #

The amount of love or respect (your call) for Apple being poured out by the slashdot community is amazing. I am seriously brought to tears. Apple appears really to be doing things correctly and this may be a breakout year for them.

Now that Dave's added the ability to stream to categories without streaming to your Home Page as well, I find that I don't yet want to use it. The reason being that I don't have links to my categories on my Home Page, so people aren't going to find my categories (well, nobody is reading this weblog anyway, so maybe it doesn't matter). I need to put links to all my categories in the link bar at the left.

I haven't said anything about Captain Stuffit lately. I am working on it. In fact, the plugin, that calls the Stuffit SDK is working and now all I have to do is hook up the UI in REALbasic and it will be ready to release as a 1.0 app. All I need now is an icon. I wish I could draw icons.
