The unicycle came today! It was in pieces so I had to put it together. That wasn't too bad. But it turned out to be too big for my wife. The seat is on a bar that slips into a sleeve that rides above the wheel. But you can't slide the seat in too far or the bar will touch the wheel. I put the seat down as far as I could but it was still too high. So I cut about an inch off the bottom of the seat bar and that was enough. Now my wife is working on mounting and balance.

It's wednesday. Time for Six Feet Under. Did I say who my favorite character is? It's David Fisher, played by Michael C. Hall. He's the younger brother and the one who understands and runs the business. He's also gay and that is handled very well. What I especially like is the contrast between his public relationship with his church and his private relationships with other men. He's still trying to keep his sexuality a secret to some extent. His family now knows, but his church, for example, doesn't. That caused a break with his first boyfriend. Another show that is exploring a homosexual relationship is ER. I might try to have something to say about that in a later post.

I wrote a piece about Microsoft's Scripting Strategy on August 31, but before the idea had a chance to develop, we switched gears like everyone else to focus on the WTC attack and terrorism. Now that things have settled back, it's worth another look, esp in light of Miguel de Icaza's plans. I like Miguel. I think everyone who meets Miguel likes him. But I don't support what he's doing, now that I understand it better after reading the post linked to above. I believe diversity is the only approach that works. A monoculture, devised by Microsoft, no matter how well-intentioned (another subject) is a very bad idea. [Scripting News]
I had kind of a different reaction. I thought Miguel was keeping an open mind. I don't know anything, really, about .NET. I think Apple has ideas about net services. For example, iPhoto can order prints and books directly through one-click. In the long run I don't know if .NET is a good idea, but if it isn't, it isn't going to last. And if it is, most likely we'll all be doing it in one form or another.

Redmonk: Linus Torvalds has finally started using BitKeeper.
About bloody time, really. [Deadly Bloody Serious Radio]
Does this mean he wasn't using any source control before this? Isn't that kinda scary?

For Deaf Signers, a Glove That Translates. Using a golf glove, a circuit board, a laptop computer and some basic electronic parts, a high school student has created a sign language glove. [The New York Times: Technology]
Very cool. I wonder if he's thought of having the glove movements translated into speech? Probably says so at the end of the article and I just didn't bother to get to the end :)

I don't know why. I have this irrational desire for readers. I ought to be writing this stuff for myself. Not for people I don't even know. But I'm constantly going back to my referers (actually, that's referrers) page to see if anybody looked yet. Sometimes somebody does look. Occasionally I toy with putting something really outrageous on my site. Porn, or dirty stories, or weird noises. But that wouldn't be me. Well, actually, it would be me. But for the wrong reasons, if you know what I mean.

I'm cheating - I've set the desktop website homepage to white. I think I was going blind with all of this Orange. [Radio.Rogis.net]

Will I be the CSS-less in the land of the CSS? [burningbird]
Sounds like one of those questions Carrie is always asking in Sex and the City.

Radio 8.0.4 is an app-only release that adds Simple Cross-Network Scripting, a feature that was designed four years ago, that pushes Radio to the leading-edge in simple client-side scripting of XML-RPC (today) and SOAP (later this month). It has an open driver-based architecture so support for new protocols can be added without kernel changes. [Scripting News]
Cool. Gotta update!

For several days, I used a Titanium PowerBook/667 full-time. Then I gave equal time to the 14-inch iBook. Here are some thoughts. [MacCentral]
When I saw the 14" iBook I realized that the 12" is better. The 14"-er is just too big, if that is possible. My wife has the 12" version and it is just so great. It's light and the screen is amazingly readable. And with Mac OS X it never crashes. Ever. Of course, that'd be true of the 14" version as well.
