A dispassionate tutorial on CSS from Apple, nicely done.  [Scripting News]

Actually, a surpisingly good tutorial.

My son just read to me a fabulous book called George and Martha Back in Town by James Marshall. George and Martha are hippos and they like each other very much. They can also be mean to each other. Aren't most friends nice and mean at the same time?

My favorite story is about a diving board. George tells Martha that today he will jump from the the high board. Martha tells George not to do go: You'd never catch me up there! George goes anyway, telling Martha she is just a scaredy-cat. But when Geoge gets to the top he is too scared to jump. So Martha climbs up after him and tells him that she will jump first. And she does. But as she is jumping George sneaks down the ladder: I just didn't feel like it today.

After you read all the stories you wonder what Martha sees in George. Isn't that what we feel about any relationship when we look at it as outsiders?

Mac OS X 10.1.3 Available [MacSlash: A daily dose of Macintosh News and Discussion]: I can't wait to update. Doesn't look like anything really amazing in this update, though...

I got to see some petroglyphs at Joshua Tree. Petroglyphs are drawings scratched onto a cave wall, usually by prehistoric people. As I stared at the petroglyphs I wondered if I was looking at the first weblog. I'm sure those carvings on the cave wall tell a story. Or maybe they are commenting on the carvings on a cave wall two valleys down. Either way, they are an expression of human thought. Isn't that what a weblog is?

The most popular blogs seem to be focused on journalistic-style commentary on memes and other topics of interest, only sprinkling in a few personal anecdotes. [Fuzzy Blogic]

KPIX: "The manager of an Albertson's in Half Moon Bay told Channel 5 that a local man in his late 50s came in Monday morning with his two daughters to validate the ticket."  [Scripting News]

Dang. I guess that means I didn't win. There were, apparently, two other winners, but neither in the store I bought my ten numbers from.

Jumpgate Alwin is a very nice looking weblog that uses CSS.

A good rundown on various companies that print digital photos. I'm surprised and disappointed by the bad results.

Judge Tells Microsoft to Share Code. A federal judge has ordered Microsoft to reveal the software code for its Windows operating system to nine states that seek tougher sanctions against the company. [The New York Times: Technology]

On the one hand I just can't help but think that the states don't have the right to paw over Microsoft's intellectual property, no matter how good the reason might be. On the other hand, I doubt they'll understand it even if they get it. Does Microsoft even understand it? That might be the MS defense: "we'd explain the source to you, but we can't."

On the other, other hand, if Microsoft really is the only game in town with respect to computer OS's, shouldn't they be regulated like a utility. If literally everybody uses Windows, then Windows becomes as essential as gas or electicity. We in California know what happens when those are deregulated.

Download.com now require registration before they'll let you download anything. Please state your email address, job function, industry, company size, postal code, and country.

Not happy, Jan. [Deadly Bloody Serious]

I guess they've got to make a buck. And they'll make it selling our personal info, no doubt.

One thing we had trouble with at Joshua Tree was how badly marked everything was. It's almost as if "they" don't want you to find anything unless you really know what you are looking for. I don't remember having so much trouble figuring out where stuff was at either Yellowstone or Sequoia National Park.

There's lots of Joshua Tree stuff I'm hoping to get into my weblog at some point. But it's probably going to come in fits and spurts. The first thing that comes to mind is how really bizarre everthing looks. What struck me as particularly strange and wonderful were the monzogranite rock formations. They almost look like something Disney would create for a Joshua Tree theme park :) But they are real. The kids had a blast climbing all over them. I probably should have been worried about that. They could fall off, after all. But somehow the strangeness of it all lulled me into a false sense of security.
