Tonight there are two back-to-back episodes of Six Feet Under on HBO. Cool.

While we were in Joshua Tree we saw a lot of these and I immediately thought of the bone trap that necromancers cast in Diablo II. But it turns out they are actually pretty flowers when seen at another time during the year.

Jonathon Delacour has this to say about speaking Japanese: I learned a long time ago that the only mistake is to let on that you don't understand what's going on. Bluff and you'll eventually be able to make an appropriate remark.
I learned the same lesson in Japan. Like Jonathon, I only understand about half of what I hear. In some ways my listening comprehension has improved after ten years of marriage, but my speaking ability has deteriorated substantially. I need to go back to Japan soon.

I really like listening to Frank Deford's comments on npr as I drive in to work. I believe they air on wednesdays. Today he talked about sports that are decided by judges rather than athelets. He doesn't like it and neither do I. Judges are subjective. A touchdown, home run, or basket, is not. That said, I'll definitely be watching the women's figure skating this weekend :)

Google's Zeitgeist, a compilation of interesting statistics from the search engine, reveals that "iMac" was the tenth most gaining query for the month of January, as noted by MacGeneration. Also during January, four percent of Google's total searches were accessed from Macs. [MacMinute.com]
So just putting this comment on my page will draw searches? We shall see.

I installed the Mac OS X 10.1.3 update and I see the spinning beachball much less often. But I figured out why. Apple didn't speed anything up, they just stopped showing the spinning beachball. Pretty clever
By the way, it isn't really a spinning beachball. It's a spinning optical disk. It comes from the NeXT (of course). The first NeXT had an optical drive that was very slow, I've heard. I have a slab, which has a regular HD, but still shows the spinning beachball. It remains unchanged in Mac OS X.
